of the exhibit "Oregon Nikkei: Reflections of an American Communi- ty". The Oregon Nikkei Endowment gratefully acknowledges all those who have shared their photographs and memories for future generations.
The first generation of Japanese in America called themselves Issei. The second generation was known as Nisei, and the third as Sansei. A new term has emerged to describe today’s Japanese Americans. Nikkei refers to any people who are living in America and are of Japanese descent–whether they are first generation or fourth generation, full blood or quarter blood.
The story of the Nikkei in America is one that must be told and retold by each generation. If you are interested in sharing your stories, artifacts or photographs, contact the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center.
