A walking tour and map of the Japantown area in Old Town, Portland, Oregon.
In the 1890s, hundreds of young Japanese immigrants arrived in Oregon to work on the railroads, lumber mills, farms and fish canneries. On weekends, they would come into Portland to relax and meet friends. Out of necessity, hotels, restaurants, laundries, stores, barbershops and even gambling houses began to develop by the Willamette River north of Burnside Street. The area became known as Japantown.
This is a brief history and tour of the Portland Japantown neighborhood.
